HELL ON WHEELS

雖然說自己至為鍾愛小鼻子小眼睛的類型音樂,但偶而來點大開大闊也是心曠神怡的選擇,在瑞典獨立音樂圈打滾多年的三人組樂團HELL ON WHEELS,於近日在Hybris Records發行的專輯The Odd Church,即是如此一張叫自己念起90年代一眾風雲的所謂第二波瑞典吉他先聲,來得是爽勁不加修飾的北國豪邁風情,而民謠搖滾的基本功紮實也不在話下,由於自己先前有聽過些HELL ON WHEELS早期部分作品,不知是否手中拿到的版本音質不佳還是如何,似乎沒聽過樂團裡的女貝斯手Åsa sohlgren有唱歌的印象,但在此張The Odd Church專輯裡,卻有不少機會能聽到她低沉渾厚的聲音.

東倫敦一群掀起新龐克風潮的新興樂團們,似乎只剩Art Brut和Bloc Party還在活動,其它像是The Others云云除了有種被傳媒利用過後的剩餘悲慘,幾乎都被北方雪菲爾德勢力壓得抬不起頭來,但近日除了Good Shoes,Carl(The Libertines)領軍的Dirty Pretty Things相繼將以新單曲來準備收復失地外,另一個來自New Cross傳統的四人組新樂團Assembly Now,倒是頗值得注意,其所錄製收錄三首曲的Apollo Control Demo除了是有為Razorlights和U2製作人John Fortis與Howard Gray來擔綱外,同時也慢慢地在一些重要英國媒體如NME,Gigwise等地方發酵著,至於Demo EP的內容確然吸取Bloc Party與The Futureheads的旋律精華,音樂聆聽的高品質甚至已可當作首張單曲來正式發行.

曼城廠牌akoustik Anarkhy可說是當地孕育刺激新樂團的重要搖藍之一,從Nine Black Alps,The Longcut的發跡,到Autokat,The Loungs,Sam & Me的絕受好評,以及神秘限量200張的Yacht Club和廠牌老闆自組的Loose Cannon,每一張的發行都有各自的獨立特色,也因此本小店快樂且榮幸地引進幾乎是aA全部的發行,除了The Loungs只拿到一張被自己A走之外,其他包括了所有黑膠和廠牌絕讚CD合輯均有販售,小小介紹及圖片刊登如下:

這星期從Le Sport和Vapnet(新單曲Thoméegränd的SKWBN版本相當相當好)相繼為新單曲出版混音以來,以及曾在Service廠牌旗下的The Studio新單曲No Comply,這波瑞典熱舞就持續跳動到現在,而後從相關網站如Tangents,Shaktar等收來下載歌曲;但在英國方面一些新派的電子合成器樂團如I Love Poland,[Heart]Yeah!!等,同時融合Suicide和Post-Punk-Art-Pop的怪異曲風,黑暗又獨樹一格,此外electro-pop-disco-funk基本款新秀New Young Pony Club,至今為止的三張單曲,表現同樣不俗.

雪菲爾德樂團Smokers Die Younger以其'警世'團名,和兩張漫畫幽默的單曲獲得不小注意,首張專輯X Wants The Meat將於下週(3月27日英國時間星期一,本小店理論上於1週後抵達)發行,也就是編號SPCLP005,在此之前抽出輯內歌曲'I SPY Dry Fear'以編號SPC010作為線上單曲(link寫於其下),有興趣者可去SDY的myspace試聽其他曲.

所以編號SPC010是TheeSPC第二張虛擬膠片單曲(也就是有封面有唱片但無實物,下載only),你很難去形容SDY的特殊樂風,那就像是Pavement處於立體派作品中混亂演奏嘶吼...

Beaumont once made Discotheque A La Carte EP as a new dance direction apart from their Blueboy-related acoustic beauty,but this magic is sadly loss after someone left the band,however,Today Swedish label Songs i wish i had written bring this electric dreams back to the world again,and this year we now have splendid singles from gentle Touch, Unarmed Enemies and Le Sport,all are sparkling their innovative beats perfectly.

Le Sport is not the ordinary dance act,they are innately genius to blend Indiepop guitar melodies with 80's keyboard sound,for their new single 'It's not the end of the world',they are attracted to early British electropop like their previous works,but also quoted a hefty rhythm and some curious synths of eurodisco best prime,with other track like electro-nova 'Loveboat',and smash-so-hard pretentious dancefloor value 'Euroheart',these two pretty boys really know how to write the glamorous club hits,and glitzy sonic pop songs.

The humourous lyric,jagged rhythm and clanky guitar sound are manifest on stopstarts music,all to make their debut single 'My Watch is Digital' is more incredible catchy than 'House Of Jealous Lovers',or a more clean look than the Postcard Babies,and if The Futureheads/ Maximo Park have heard this song they would slave to the stopstarts beat immediately,this is one of the most significant track in 2006.

不知道這個英國五人組新樂團是怎麼辦到的,涵蓋了從Airport Girl,the Fat Tulips,The Lucksmiths和The Actionettes的團員,幾乎是自己喜愛樂團的超級組合,想當然爾再加更想當然爾,絕對是indiePop的樂型和風格,特別可與C86唯一復興C96唯一代言Comet Gain相比較,除了同樣皆根基於復古車庫精神外,The Cut-Outs還多了永不言老的稚氣清新.

今日勤奮閱讀時發現有個小問題值得好好思考,當舞場裡的舞客舞到渾然忘我或是high不起來時,也許會走向DJ台要求放些指定歌曲,如果把這樣的場景搬到搖滾樂團的現場演出,碰到同樣狀況時會有人要求台上的吉他手,去彈奏對方想聽的指定歌曲嗎?這樣一想答案真是顯而易見且一針見血,不過這個不是我自己想到的,而是英國一位新勁DJ Nathan Fake在Plan B雜誌的專訪中聊到,衝著這一點就該去買他的首張專輯Drowning in a sea of love,更何況還非常好聽,喔,Plan B也該買,有The Research封面外加團員互相吐槽大專訪.

閒話說完還是繼續閒下去,上文跟這文兩位瑞典玩跳舞音樂的一點關係也沒有(而且也沒文),只不過都是玩舞曲所以應景一下:

I was lured on to all releases from Manchester-based label aA: Loose Canon,autokat,Yacht Club,Sam & Me,The Loungs and others excellent acts are just pecuilar cool enough, none of their music can be specificed in any horrible trendy scene.

The first band I knew from aA last year is autokat respectly,their ace debut is entertained by all means,I was purred with delight on hearing ding-ding 'The Driver',that guitars blared out a hit and stab my ears joyfully,it's so automatic with the best chorus to sing-along.On 'Television' you could hear the anthem 'Song 2' in some senes,only if it is H-bomb breakbeat and goes mental.

There is no doubt I'm obsessed with their forthcoming single 'Dish Out/Get Off The Bar'(released soon around April 2006),it's like art attacker WIRE,mega noiseniker MOGWAI and political howler McCARTHY,throwing all their instruments into a severe battle,then felt no embrassment about romping somewhere,let's give praise to this bouncy Psychedelic New Wave.

On the strength of their demos:'Shot(late night shopping)','In The Morning' and live favorite 'Late in t'evening',as well as early stuff inclued 'Gun','White Shoes' etc(gee!I almost love'em all!),all are so good for dancing to even if your grandma is cooking in the tiny kitchen,however,as a serious critic I should seek a recipe of this compilation:

- based on the mystic spirits of Liverpool phantom bands.
- some danceable cuts from Madchester heyday.(choose the bands like Laugh!,Paris Angels etc,to prevent stereotyped brands)
- add two cups of twist effect to make it swing.(go find the records like The Passmore Sisters,Rain etc)
- apply luminous oils of Animals That Swim.

Now you have the most delicious cake made in the sixties.(yeah sixties,I believe you have no fear to eat)

Let Her Go

Two awesome singles to date,with a couple of tracks featured on Dance To The Radio label compilations,all from hotly tipped Leeds band The Lodger,their new third release 'Let Her Go/We Come From The Same Place' is due out on Angular Records on Monday 1st May,remember to clean your disorderly vinyl shelf up and leave a shining space for this.

This double a-side single is truely in a great cover art form,which has elegant taste of record design layout also fits The Lodger music perfectly,and how pop brilliance should be in numerous meanings.Go repeat the song 'Let Her Go' constantly,their finest guitars jangle is a pure sigh to The Wedding Present's sparkle melodies,thump drum and bass driven are less shyness than the Happy Mondays' groove thang,even more so when a trumpet sound appears and it goes unexpected emotionally.

On 'We Come From The Same Place' is much similiar to their previous song 'Not So Fast',the beat played at a flawless pace but it might has little spaghetti westerns inspired in my speculation,then fell into a state of melancholy after breathtaking grand string arrangements,I had a last wistful singing in tune.

應該是兩年前的幾張單曲,On a Hillside,Baton Rouge,Sex Made Me Sick等等讓自己知曉了這來自瑞典的樂團The Kid,那時除了驚艷於比New Order更淒厲的韻律外,更盼望The Kid有正式的作品出現,沒想到一等又晃了一年多,直至今年才出版了這名為La Societe Nouvelle,從色調上到音樂皆佈滿忐忑不安的首張專輯.

如何忐忑?光是歌名如The Noble Art of Jealousy,Suicide in Brouxelles等或能聽出些端倪,但不同於早期歌曲的不加修飾,此次The Kid的重新回歸,作為單曲的Kit Club Hotel,成熟地將黯黑迪斯可與Peter Hook低音型濃壓出悅耳的深沉旋律,如果能聽出自己心跳節奏的緩慢跳動,這曲Kit Club Hotel即是隱藏於混濁血液下的陰洌舞蹈;而若把Depeche Mode的黑色榮耀與Nick Cave的邪性餘光,封鎖在弦聲激濺的暗影中,那便是歌曲Geology所給予最極致的美麗鞭笞.

要想回到曼城Haçienda的酸性瘋狂時代,歌曲Slopak的跳躍鍵琴和另一首如Happy Mondays昏沉鼓擊的Tease Me Teaser,必能延綿體內想敗壞的歡樂;但也別忘了還有首Part Time Punks,曲名跟The Television Personalities沒多少關係,但你將會聽到Joy Division的Love Will Tear Us Apart變速副聲,與類似Tiga的80舞節奏,有著如何異色物離的化學作用.

Yacht Club is another rising talent from the majestic label Akoustik Anarkhy in Manchester,their first ep is limited to 200 in killer 12inch format and entitled 'YC001',if AFX gaves NEU! a heavy blow on the their 4/4 rhythms,you would probably hear dazed sound from outer space.Moreover building their own myspace as 'YC002' name,then got some songs from the title of 'Cross of Rock',which I'd like to call Heehaw-Post-Rock in this issue.Don't dare to say YC is a kind of weird electronic artist,you would knock your sock off to hear 'inside of a room','july' and 'there was a party',all show jangly pop right next to the stepping explosion.By collecting all the stuff from these resources afterwards,I have my own 'YC003' which means non-official,this is the mighty 19 track compilation,also a mysterious masterpiece.

The man behinds YC is Andrew Rowley,he once played guitar with his labelmate Autokat,also be a member of The Forest at the present(will do a gig with Letters & Colours soon,how cool!).

If The Smiths ever played 'Hand in Glove' or 'How soon is now' more fiercely,and recorded it in Andy Warhol's Factory,the songs would became Arty Garage getting intellectual and beat TheVelvetUnderground easily,that's 'I didn't mean it' which blow my mind surprisingly from this 4 pieces band Hands and Knees,and they also have more fiery song like 'in your heart'(or 'shove it up your heart' on their myspace),go rather splash and nasty than The White Stripes in style.

New song 'are we full of it' might has the same bitter sense as their another song 'into the cold lake',and I really really want to sing along with this sweet-frustration tone by heart,but this is not enough how great Hands and Knees are all about,your face would be in a dull colour if you missed the certain charms of 'baby goodbye' and 'bike'.
